Learn how economics and markets link together in the system of capitalism, and influence decisions on issues such as economic inequality, environmental impacts and climate change.
This Spark credential focuses on how capitalist markets work from an economics viewpoint. It explores the concepts of private property and economic growth and the socioeconomic issues of economic inequality and environmental impacts.
It is one of three Spark credentials that can be completed together and used as credit towards a Curtin bachelor degree in either commerce or business administration.
Earn credit towards your Curtin bachelor degree
When you complete this Spark credential together with Spark credentials in Legal Frameworks; and Making Sense of Modern Markets, you’ll earn 25 credit points towards the Markets and Legal Frameworks unit, normally studied in the first year of your degree.
This Spark credential is designed specifically for students who aspire to understand social-ecological factors involved in economic markets and want to contribute to economic decisions that respond to real-world issues.
On completion of your Spark credential, you will be able to:
- explain how the economy affects the business environment
- compare the similarities and differences between price-setting and price-taking firms to illustrate profit and market power
- explain how business and marketing strategies create value through the application of economic principles.

Senior Lecturer/Faculty of Business and Law
Dr. Andrew Brennan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He holds a PhD in Economics and Finance from Curtin University, as well as Bachelor's degrees in Commerce with specialisations in Economics and Finance.
In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Brennan is actively involved in peer review of educational practices within his department. He has published book chapters and journal articles on topics such as climate change policy, elephant poaching and ivory trafficking, and critiques of sustainability indicators. Dr. Brennan brings an interdisciplinary perspective to his work, incorporating insights from fields like political economy and systematic theology alongside economics.
Faculty of Business and Law
Keegan is a PhD Candidate, Research Assistant, and Teaching Assistant in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance, and the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University. He holds a Graduate Certificate in Business and a Bachelor's Degree (Honours) with specialisations in Global Development and World Languages. His research explores the intersection of climate change and political behaviour. He has contributed to various economics projects, including a DFAT-funded initiative to create a policy framework for Paris Agreement climate commitments in Indo-Pacific countries and an Australian Business Deans Council-funded study on climate change integration in business curricula.
Keegan has also led interdisciplinary efforts to combat greenwashing, most recently through an invited submission to the Australian Senate Inquiry into Greenwashing. His teaching focuses on integrating climate change and sustainable development with economics instruction, and he earned an Associate Fellowship with Advance HE for his commitment to contemporary teaching practices.
