Learn how to identify, collect and process native seeds ethically and sustainably.

If you’re a land or sea country ranger, this five-day introductory course will help you gain experience in plant identification, seed collection, testing and processing to support your on-Country work and operations.

You’ll learn the biology, ecology and physiology of seeds and the key elements of the native seed supply chain.

Through a blend of traditional practices and modern techniques, you'll learn key skills to help in the ethical restoration and rehabilitation of native vegetation.

Who is this credential for?

 

This credential suits First Nations rangers and land managers looking to collect native seeds for use in land management and restoration projects.

 

What you will learn

 

By completing this credential you will learn to:

  • apply advanced techniques for the collection, processing, testing, and production of native seeds, integrating traditional Indigenous knowledge with contemporary scientific methods
  • evaluate different seed collection and processing techniques based on species and environmental contexts, ensuring optimal outcomes for conservation and restoration
  • learn to independently process and test seeds for quality without causing damage.

 

Assessment

To successfully complete this credential, you are required to undertake and pass practical assessments. To demonstrate what you have learned, you will demonstrate a variety of tasks including the correct preparation, pre- and post-field collection, of seeds, sterilisation of equipment, utilisation of correct identification methods, harvesting process, and storage and handling of seed product.

Dr Simone Pedrini

Senior Lecturer/School of Molecular and Life Sciences

Simone Pedrini is a lecturer in environmental restoration at the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University. His primary research focus is optimising the native seed supply chain for ecological restoration. He is an expert in seed collection and production, seed processing, quality testing, dormancy treatment, seed enhancement and seed use in the field. He is a certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner, Chair of the International Network for Seed-Based Restoration and advisor to the European Native Seed Producers Association.
