Enhancing your visual artistry skills can help you prepare your students for creative portfolio entry pathways to university.

In this credential, you’ll develop your teaching skills through studio practice in a specialist area of art, fostering your experimentation and critical thinking abilities.

You’ll write a proposal, develop a body of visual creative work and present it in a digital portfolio, gaining skills to further your career as a specialist high school art teacher, and the knowledge to guide your students through creative portfolio entry pathways to university.

This credential is taught through a blend of practical and online learning, and co-developed with industry to ensure your learning reflects current practice trends, and utilises new technology and industry-standard equipment.

  • Module 1: What is an Art Project
    (Online 1 hr presentation)
    Time and Date: 6:30pm Wednesday 12 JUN 2024

  • Module 2: The Artists Portfolio
    (Online 2 hr presentation, workshop and discussion)
    Time and Date: 6:30pm Wednesday 26 JUN 2024

  • Module 3: Studio Practice
    (On campus workshops and studio time)
    Day 1: 8:30am - 5pm Friday 5 JUL 2024 (includes full workshop day with artist Jo Darvall)
    Day 2: 8:30am - 5pm Saturday 6 JUL 2024

  • Module 4: Ways to Reflect on Your Art Project
    (Online presentation 1 hr)
    Time and Date: 6:30pm Wednesday 14 AUG 2024

  • Assessment Due Date: 9:00am Sunday 22 SEP 2024

 

What you will learn

 

By completing this credential you will learn to:

  • apply professional principles to develop your technical, conceptual, and experimental skills in art making, including technical illustrations, model building, and patterns and templates
  • plan and create an original creative body of work
  • develop your documentation and digital literacy skills and use them to create a digital presentation
  • effectively communicate your creative projects and apply an understanding of art theory to creative practice
  • learn innovative education strategies to engage students in arts learning.

 

Assessment(s)

To successfully complete this credential, you are required to pass a final assessment. To demonstrate what you have learned, you will be required to submit a written proposal, artist statement and digital portfolio.

 

Meet your facilitators

 

Mark Parfitt
Mark Parfitt

School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Humanities

Mark Parfitt is a contemporary artist and Major Lead for the Bachelor of Creative Arts Fine Art major at Curtin University.

He is currently a PhD candidate in Creative Practice at RMIT University and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science), a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Master of Art (Visual Art).

Mark’s practice draws from everyday desires, problems and daily anomalies to investigate the being and doing within ordinary life.

Coming from the position of ‘art as action’, Mark produces autobiographical work in the form of journals, performance and sculpture. Since 2004, he has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions, featured in institutional and private collections and has attracted the funding of numerous grants, residencies and prizes.

Mark is a member of the National Association for Visual Artists (NAVA) and Artsource (Artists' Foundation of Western Australia) and is Chair of the City of South Perth Public Art Advisory Group.
