Learn how evaluation can enhance and maximise student equity program effectiveness in this practical introductory course.
In this course, you’ll become familiar with the role of evaluation in relation to student equity programs and practice, be introduced to the Student Equity in Higher Education Evaluation Framework (SEHEEF). You’ll gain an understanding of the framework and its key elements, and the ability to relate this to your day-to-day practice in student equity.
You’ll also be introduced to key ethical and privacy considerations when working in this area.
This stream suits equity professionals working in Australian universities.
This stream comprises 3 modules (modules 1-3 of the ACSES Evaluation Learning Program).
Module 1: Introduction to Equity Evaluation
Overview
This module introduces and provides a brief history of student equity funding in Australian Universities and the background to the Student Equity in Higher Education Evaluation Framework (SEHEEF). Learners will gain a foundational understanding of the framework’s purpose and how it applies to student equity programs and practice. It also introduces the key components, ___ and terminology used in the SEHEEF.
Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this module Learners will:
- Understand the background and purpose of the SEHEEF.
- Understand the fundamental components of the SEHEEF, including the:
- Student life stages
- Distinction between student equity programs and activities
- Typology of activities
- Student Pathway Map
- Master Program Logic
Module 2: Evaluation Fundamentals
Overview
This module provides an overview of program evaluation, and how this applies to the SEHEEF. It explains the purpose and benefits of evaluating student equity programs, and key principles to ensure robust and valid evaluation that produces meaningful and accurate findings. By the end of the module, learners will understand why the evaluation of student equity programs is important and the key steps and requirements for effective program evaluation.

At the completion of this module Learners will:
- Understand what evaluation is, and why the evaluation of student equity programs is important.
- Understand the key steps and requirements for effective program evaluation.
Module 3: Ethical Evaluation
Overview
This module covers best practices in evaluating student equity programs, focusing on issues of ethics and privacy. It looks at how to protect participants' safety and wellbeing while providing accurate and useful insights for decision-making. It also addresses special concerns when evaluating programs for vulnerable groups and ensures that comparison groups are treated fairly. Additionally, it explains when formal research ethics approval is necessary.
Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this module Learners will:
- Understand the importance of ethical conduct in undertaking student equity program evaluations.
- Understand institutional responsibilities in ensuring ethical evaluation practices, including when engaging with vulnerable populations.
- Understand when to seek formal research ethics approval for student equity program evaluation.
